Grandmaster Sergey Shipov is providing live commentary at Crestbook on the Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk-aan-Zee, and I’ll once again be taking on the foolhardy task of trying to translate his words almost immediately into English, here at Chess in Translation.
Sergey Shipov needs little introduction. Although he’s taken on many roles in his time – elite grandmaster, Garry Kasparov’s blitz sparring partner, author (The Complete Hedgehog) and trainer (Nepomniachtchi is one student he’s worked with) – he’s best known for his internet journalism, and especially his live commentary. His combination of chess knowledge, speed of thought (and computer skills) and a wonderful turn of phrase, makes for a final product that’s usually worth reading long after you know which passed pawn prevailed.
